Great Escape RV Park and Campground in Missouri: Review and Photos
Located close to Kansas City, Great Escape RV Park and Campground in Higginsville, Missouri, makes for an easy overnight stay off of I-70.
While it’s not quite a vacation destination unto itself, this quiet campground is excellent for a night or two before you head onto your next stop.
In the review below, you’ll find everything you need to know about this campground from site photos to an overview of the property’s amenities.
We camped here on our multi-week road trip from South Carolina to Utah, and it was a great option to rest with our kids before hopping back onto the interstate.
We originally chose this campground for its convenient location directly off of I-70, but, now that I’ve stayed here, I recommend it for the quiet location, helpful employees, and kid-friendly amenities.
If you’re looking for a campground that blends relaxation with convenient road trip access, Great Escape RV Park and Campground might be the thing your cross country journey is missing.

Camping in Higginsville, Missouri: What to Consider
The kids playing at the campground
Higginsville is remote, and the actual town is off of I-70 to the north. Great Escape RV Park and Campground is on the outskirts of Higginsville just south of I-70 and the town.
If you’re just looking for a quick, clean place to stay off of the interstate, but still want to be close enough to a Walmart, this campground will be a great fit.
There are a few restaurants within easy driving distance of the campground, and a large Pilot gas station at the same exit if you’d like a cup of coffee or snacks before you get back on I-70.
Kansas City is an hour due west of the campground. In our case, I wanted to position us so that we’d be able to go through Kansas City before the morning rush hour, so Great Escape RV Park put me in the best situation to do just that.
Other Camping Options Nearby
PIN ME!
Because Higginsville and the surrounding area is rural, there aren’t a ton of camping options here.
We considered staying at the Arcadian Moon Winery RV Park, and I likely would’ve booked here if it had just been me or me and my husband visiting.
But, instead, I was traveling with my kids and my dad, and I wanted a place where all of us could relax, preferably by a pool, after a day of 8-10 hours of driving.
The Arcadian Moon Winery RV Park doesn’t have a pool or full hook-ups, so I decided to leave that for another trip.
Owl Creek RV in Odessa, Missouri, was another place I considered, but ultimately threw it out for the fact that I didn’t want to drive another 20 minutes down the road after driving all day from Tennessee. So, that wasn’t Owl Creek campground fault!
Owl Creek campground does have a pool, wide lots, and kid-friendly amenities, so it’s fairly similar to Great Escape RV Park and Campground if you don’t mind adding a few extra minutes to your drive.
Ultimately, I chose Great Escape RV and Campground because it was at the 8.5 hour mark on our day’s drive time—which is about the longest we can go without the kids and I going crazy.
It’s close to the interstate with a very easy on and off from the exit. The campground is well marked and we had no trouble finding it.
Great Escape RV Park and Campground Review
The main office building
We stayed here from one night in late May as part of our long road trip from South Carolina to Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and South Dakota.
It was our next stop after our time at the Nashville East/Lebanon TN KOA.
Because of that itinerary, we were doing everything we could to just get out west, and, so, we were putting in 8-10 hour days pulling my Winnebago Micro Minnie 1800BH.
The Great Escape RV Park and Campground works well for families like mine who need a short stay, but it also has enough amenities to help you fill up a multi-day stay, too.
The campground wasn’t busy while we were there, and the spots that were filled seemed to be about evenly divided between short stays like mine and longer stay tenants like the travel nurse we met.
She confirmed that the campground had been quiet and safe for the duration of her stay, which was going on 8 weeks when we met her.

Check-in Process
When we pulled off of I-70 and into the check-in area of the campground, the first thing we noticed was how well marked everything was. The check-in area was wide and didn’t block the driveway so that other cars could still come and go while we were busy inside.
The employee at the desk was helping another camper when I walked in, but he quickly finished up, and welcomed me with a smile.
In no time at all, I had my check-in materials and my site number, and we were on the way to our site.
It was a very easy check-in, and I came away with a clear idea of what the campground had to offer us during our stay and where everything was.
Individual Campsite Review
Our camper in site 22
During our stay, we were placed in site 22, which is halfway down one of the rows in the section closest to the office.
Since we were a little early for their peak summer season, we had the entire row nearly to ourselves, with neighbors only on the driver’s side. There were just a few other campers on the row in the middle of this front section of the campground.
Because of the lack of other visitors, our site felt very open and spacious. While I know that’s not the case when the park is nearing capacity, the sites were larger than your typical KOA, and I don’t think I would’ve felt cramped had we had campers on either side.
Our site was one of the many pull-through spots, and it was long enough to leave our camper attached to our truck.
I was so glad that the site allowed for this set up, as it made our break-down process the next morning incredibly easy.
Our site had full hook-ups and 30/50 amp electric. The water spout and electric box were well taken care of and easy to use.
Campground Layout
The Great Escape RV Park and Campground is laid out in 2 larger sections: one towards the front office, and another towards the fishing pond in the back.
Each section has 4 rows of sites, making it easy to find where you’re going.
The dividing line between the two sections is the clubhouse, where you’ll find the showers and laundry. This is also where you’ll find a small restaurant, but it wasn’t open when we stayed there.
If you happen to be staying on a Friday or Saturday, stop by the bar and grill to get a burger!
The pool is close to the clubhouse, making the amenities centrally located for campers in both sections of the park.
There is a small tent camping section at the very back of the campground, near the group fire pit and a covered pavilion.
Despite the park’s location next to the busy I-70, the road noise wasn’t bad, even in our front section. If you’re looking for a super quiet experience, opt for one of the sites in the back 4 rows.
We did notice some road noise as we were fixing dinner and hanging out around the camper, but that’s the trade off for a campground that’s as convenient to the interstate as this one.

Campground Amenities
Camp store
In the main building at the front of the campground, you’ll find a small camp store near the check-in area.
While it’s not going to have everything you could possibly need, there are some food staples here, ice cream, drinks, bags of ice, and a handful of souvenirs.
If you can’t find something here that you need, there is a Pilot gas station less than 5 minutes away.
Dog Park
If you’re traveling with your pets, it’s always good to have a space where they can run around.
There is a fenced in dog park at Great Escape RV Park in the front section of the campground. It was one row over from our camper on the side of the campground furthest from the entrance road.
Pool
It’s a lot to ask kids to sit in a car for 8-10 a day for days on end.
While my kids are usually pretty good about entertaining themselves in the back seat, they (understandably) are about to burst with energy when we do get out of the truck for the day.
They always ask for a campground with a pool and/or playground, and I do my best to include that in my planning.
Great Escape RV Park does have a pool, which was a big reason I chose it.
We could barely get out of the truck before the kids had their suits on and were ready to check out the pool!
It was clean and quiet during our visit with several lawn chairs for relaxing or drying off.
Playground
There is also a playground here, though my kids gravitated more towards the pool. (It’s always a toss up on which they’ll want the most!)
There are several areas for kids to play on here, including swings, a slide, and a climbing structure. I liked that the owners included smaller, ride-on toys for younger kids to push around the space.
Inside the laundry room
Laundry
The laundry room is located at the bottom of the clubhouse area across the hall from the bathrooms.
It was clean and spacious while I was there, and I was the only one to do laundry the night we visited.
There are a couple of chairs in the room if you’d like to wait while your laundry is finishing up, but I felt fine leaving the washer and dryer during their cycles since there weren’t too many people moving around on the property.
They are coin operated, so be sure to bring your quarters.
Bathrooms
Doors into each of the individual bathrooms
The bathrooms are also located in the bottom of the clubhouse, and there are individual rooms with a toilet, sink, and shower.
I liked the privacy of this set-up, which felt more like our bathrooms at home than the typical shared campground bathrooms with multiple stalls.
The bathrooms here weren’t super modern, but they were clearly taken care of and recently cleaned, which I care about much more.
The water pressure was great, and water was nice and hot, and it was easy to get my kids set up for their own showers.
Final Thoughts on The Great Escape RV Park
The trees at the edge of the property with the interstate just beyond the fence
While it isn’t particularly flashy, this family run campground is welcoming and well cared for.
I initially picked it for its very convenient location by the interstate, but the pool, playground, and overall cleanliness make it a campground that I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at again.
It’s always refreshing to find an independent campground that’s been in busy for years, and yet still works hard to bring a great experience to their guests.
Whether you’re tent camping solo or RV camping with the family, this park is a great option along I-70.
